Ever since we went to Gavin's Pinewood Derby, Luke has been obsessed with building and racing his own. I told him that he would need to wait until he was a little bit older and in scouts, but he was relentless. Imagine how excited he was when our ward announced that they were doing a family style Pinewood Derby and that everyone could participate. He immediately begged to go buy the kid and he and Tim got started on the design immediately. Ruby, wasn't about to be left out and spent a lot of time considering her design options as well. Luckily, we have a nice guy in our ward who let Tim and the kids go over and use his tools and equipment to shape the cars, and then we went as a family to buy the pain and accessories for Ruby's piggy car.
Finally, the day of the Pinewood Derby arrived and both kids were sooo excited. They had the best time watching their cars and came in at a solid second place for nearly every heat. I am so glad the ward opened up the racing for everyone. This was such a great experience for the kids - using tools, painting, and figuring out how to make the car go even faster. I'm pretty sure Luke is already thinking about his design for next year.
